I just recently bought this 38’ 1977 Choate sailboat… it had around 8 months of growth underneath. I thought I’d be able to do it on my own. Unfortunately I don’t have the time. Bottom cleaning and painting are two of the most important maintenance issues for yacht owners to be constantly aware of. We highly recommend get the bottom of your boat cleaned every 3 weeks between the monts of April and October. The reason for it is that marina growth increase substantially due to warm waters. No only can failure to have your hull cleaned every 3 weeks result in cosmetic issues, it also effects your fuel consumption. As pointed out here, failure to keep on top of bottom care can result in galvanic corrosion in the metals and structural issues.
There are many reasons why you should keep the bottom of your boat cleaned. One is to preserve the bottom paint. Another one is that increase boat performance such as improving fuel consumption. Also, your thru hulls will never get clogged.
Boat anodes (also referred to as boat zincs) protect the metal parts of your boat from galvanic corrosion, which occurs when any two dissimilar metals are physically or electrically connected and immersed in water (such as the shaft, rudder, outboard, stern drive or propeller). It’s so important replace and tightened your anodes as they get lose sometimes with the vibration of the boat.
